Sledge Concrete Coatings

Asked for additional $1600 in day of installation

In deciding on who to do my garage floor, Sledge Concrete was chosen based on an excellent presentation and sales job done by their salesman. Although, the most expensive of the 5 companies I received quotes from, the long term guarantee and statement of excellence in craftsmanship and durability sold me. Unfortunately their sales promises and operations departments do not jive.

The sales guy mentioned 3 grades available - basically plain, medium and supreme (not actual terms but you get the gist) with supreme being about twice the price of plain. The extra costs were explained as the top end application required more prep work which included a process called diamond grinding. The sales guy sold us on the long term guarantee and the superb look of the finished product.
We chose Sledge and cleared our garage as requested. On the day prior to our installation start, we were called that the install team would not be able to come until later in the day as they were being tied up with finishing a more pressing job. That was no problem for me but I told them I’d have to leave a door unlocked as I couldn’t be home in the afternoon until late.
I received a phone call in the early afternoon stating that our garage floor would need more prep work and that we would need to pay an extra $1600 more to get the diamond grinding done.

WTH? I stated that this had already been explained by the salesman and that even though the cost already exceeded other quotes by $1200, I had decided to go ahead with Sledge. I asked for the manager to call back.

Later in the afternoon, I received a call. The manager explained that the salesperson was an independent contractor and that the manager usually did 90% of the estimates and that the independent guy “got it wrong”.

I was exasperated that I had items sitting outside my garage and everything ready to go. The manager would NOT honour the salesman quote and again asked that I agree to pay the extra $1600. I refused but wanting to get the job done, I offered to pay half the “extra” cost - $800. The manager again refused.

I’m not sure if I was being played, scammed or attempted to be fleeced for more $$$. Or if there was some other reason Sledge couldn’t/wouldn’t complete my floor that day (possibly other “more pressing” jobs ?) but felt we were not treated fairly. I would not recommend this company.

*Sledge did refund my deposit with no problems.

Mr. Libby,

I apologize for the misquote on your garage floor. The Salesman for the Garage Cabinet Company that quoted your floor said that he talked to you about the existing coating in your garage needing removed and you preferred not to remove and wanted to go over the existing coating. Sometimes we can do this, although we only warranty that our coating will stick to what it is going over.
We received the quote, spoke to you to schedule your garage and at no time was existing coating mentioned, nor the line item for stripping filled in or charged for to indicate there was an existing coating. Upon our crew arriving they realized there was an existing coating, it was coming up from your concrete badly and even if we did not warranty the floor it was not possible to go over it with the new coating.
Removal is a labor intense, time consuming project that we charge $2 psf for and it is still not a profitable item. So the credit card fees for both the initial deposit and the refund, along with the lost time at your job & loss of revenue it would have been more profitable to go over your existing coating as it was quoted. But we at Sledge Concrete Coatings believes that you will be happier having the existing coating removed before you invest your money going over a failing coating. We care about your end product and the quality of your work. With that in mind we could not continue with the way it was quoted.
Time frames for a job is hard to gauge there are so many variables in trade work, not the least of being traffic, machines breaking etc. Our crew’s have to work around these obstacles as they come and make decisions on site, unfortunately that sometimes delays another equally valued customer.
I am sorry that you were not able to have your garage completed at that time and that you did not clearly understand the process. We have taken steps to keep this from happening again in the future. We hope you found someone to do the job correctly in your price range.
Sincerely,
Melissa Sledge
