S&H Campground

Like Summer Camp in the 60’s

The campground has most of what they advertise if you follow their schedule closely. We received the requested amenities we reserved (full hookups) and were offered a selection of sites to choose from. We had to stay six weeks, so we moved to another site for better drainage at one point. The gravel dust can wear on your nerves if you stay long enough and the bath houses mostly all need some serious repairs and or improvement compared to any other campground we’ve stayed. The laundry facilities are super sad. I tried to use it once but ended up driving to Greenfield to a laundromat. There are 3 playgrounds, but one is not worth the walk to see. The central activities “on the hill” are commendable. When they are active (mostly just Saturdays: check the schedule) they offer up a wholesome camp fun feeling. We were not there for a vacation but a family medical need and found the long term/ permanent residence to be kind and welcoming. Know in advance, there are a lot of long term folks that have added to their campers in ways you might find surprising but functional. It was interesting... but kind-of depressing in some cases. Overall, S&H common areas are pretty clean (bathrooms were clean- just need some maintenance) seasonally decorated, and lawns maintained. We enjoyed the local musician entertainment on weekends and appreciated the convenience. Because of the planned activities, train, and inflatables, it’s a very popular camp for local and long term residence to invite their grandchildren to visit. We did not use the pool but it is large and has a plenty of chairs. The pool is old. I don’t think the water was discolored but the concrete bottom might be. Families were having fun and it has a nice pool side area. Drainage from the pool (back wash area) creates an awful mucky section right by the playground. And around the snack bar trailer; another maintenance consideration I’d think, but you learn to avoid it after you step in it once.
I wrote this review because we almost didn’t stay there after reading other reviews. Our experience was overall satisfactory. This is an old camp. There are really old buildings. It’s reminds me of summer camps from long ago, but with a lot of effort to offer extras and take care of everyone. It’s a big property. That said, they need more dumpsters. Garbage overflowing was the worst part of our stay. I’ve never seen a campground so big with just two dumpster.

That said, the best part were the beautiful trees, the flowers and fall decorations, and the train rides on Saturday for the kids.
