Total rip off

Very disappointed with my experience. I’m leaving this review because I feel the pricing on this job was completely unreasonable.

A threaded fitting going into my backflow preventer broke. The estimated material cost was roughly $30–$40. I was quoted over $1,100 for the repair, which was discounted to $864 because I’m a member.

I asked the technician for an explanation of the pricing and his daily/hourly rate, but he would not provide it. I ultimately decided not to have the company perform the work and did it myself. I spent about $35 in materials and roughly two hours completing the repair.

Afterward, I called the general manager to discuss the quote and gave him the opportunity to explain it. He confirmed that the $864 price was in fact the price they stood behind. I explained that I had completed the same repair myself in approximately two hours using about $35 in materials, and that I felt their quote was extremely excessive.

The GM still stood by the price and explained that they bid jobs as a lump sum rather than providing an hourly rate. He also stated that the company only makes around 3–5% profit on this type of work, which I found difficult to reconcile with the price quoted.

I understand companies need to make a profit, and I’m not expecting work to be done at cost. But when a relatively straightforward repair involving approximately $35 in materials is quoted at $864, I believe customers deserve a clear explanation of how that price was determined.

I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion and comparing pricing before approving work. My experience left me feeling that the price was far beyond what was reasonable for the work involved.
