Welcome to Harlem

From a native New Yorker, this is one of the best things to do in New York!

I first became aware of Welcome to Harlem through a website called SweetJack, which is similar to LivingSocial. They were offering a great deal, a 1 1/2 hour walking tour through Harlem. Even though I am a native New Yorker, I haven't experienced anything like this so I thought this would be a good catalyst into taking advantage of this whatever the cost may be.

I took some time to research Welcome to Harlem before buying the deal. Their website was very easy to navigate and explained in detail all the various tours available so there was nothing left for me to wonder about, all of my questions were answered from the website, which really helped to make my overall experience seamless.

Before I decided on a day, it was a matter of seeing what the weather would be like and if it was conducive to a walking tour. It turned out that the weather was exquisite on the day we chose to take the walking tour. It was dry, sunny and in the high 70's.

When I called, the woman who answered had a very warm and welcoming voice. She explained the details of the tour and what our expectations should be for the day.

We took the rail from Queens and found their office with no trouble. Cheryl was our tour guide for the afternoon. She told us that the tour would take about an 1 hour and a 1/2. It ended up being twice as long due to Cheryl's wealth of knowledge and our groups continued conversation. We really enjoyed it. We all connected nicely with each other. When we parted company, we exchanged emails with Cheryl because she wanted to share information about the other tours they offer. And by the time we got home, Cheryl had already sent us a very nice email with all the information we had asked for.

I have no complaints and no suggestions on what could be done better. They were wonderful! Welcome to Harlem is a wonderful organization. They hire residents of Harlem, so that adds depth to the emotions because it's their home turf. I am really glad I discovered this service because as a retired school teacher, it will be nice to take guided tours during the summer from a company with such deep knowledge.
