Peterson & Smith Equine Hospital

Terrible bedside manner, no communication on condition

I took my horse to Peterson and Smith in an Emergency when he started showing mild colic symptoms. They kept him overnight and told me they would call and update me. When I had not received an update by the next morning I drove up there to see my horse, when i got there he appeared to be doing better, but the vet in charge of his care, Dr. Seitz-Cherner was no where to be found even after we had been there for several hours. After about 3 hours she came by and gave us a very brief update that nothing had really changed too much but that he seemed to perk up when I got there. After this brief update we went to get a bite to eat and when we came back 1 hour later my horse had clearly taken a turn for the worse and was down and in pain. Again, Dr. Emma Seitz-Cherner was nowhere to be found. At this point I was panicking and a bit upset, because I had asked them to update me if anything changed while I was gone to eat and not received any update or info at all. Finally after at least an hour or so of crying, calling my personal vet and having her call the hospital several times for Dr. Seitz-Cherner, she finally came to “update” me. During this update she was condescending and wildly unsympathetic. She spoke to me like a child and when I expressed I was unhappy with the lack of communication on his condition, asked me if I had ever been to a hospital before since it’s impossible to update everyone every time something changes. Given that I began working in a medical office at 15 and am a RN I was absolutely astonished she would say something like that to not only me but to anyone, and let her know that ai felt that way. At this point she told me that I had to leave because they can’t have people there all da like I had been at this point considering it was 4pm and I had been there since 9am . She also informed me they were reevaluating him and running more tests at 5pm and promised to call and update after that but that I could only stay a little bit longer. I spent another 15 min with my horse and left. When I finally got back home about an hour away, Dr. Seitz-Cherner called and informed me that things were getting a lot worse and that I needed to come back and say my goodbyes. Which I of course rushed back up there to do. When I got there, she didn’t not come to talk to me or see me and instead cowardly sent another vet, Dr. Mackenzie Luick, to put my horse down. Dr. Luick was amazing, empathetic, kind and everything Dr. Seitz-Cherner was not. After my experience with Dr. Seitz-Cherner, I would only return to Peterson and Smith on the condition she were not the vet in charge of my horse’s care. Bedside manner is a very important part of working in medicine, whether that be human or animal.
