I have a very old car, a 1988 Volkswagen Corrado. When I first got the car it needed some major work so I took it to a major chain to get them do a bunch of random things. A month later I was on the highway when smoke started coming out of the front so I took it back to them. They said it needed a new transmission and quoted me a range from $6,500-$5,000. I was a bit shocked at the price so I decided to get a second opinion at AAMCO. They took a look at the car and seemed pretty convinced that it wasn't the transmission, since I don't use this car all the time I left it with them for a couple of days to do a full check up on the car. When I came back they were sure that there was something wrong with 1 of 22 tiny parts but that they would need to check each one individually. This time I left my car with them for a couple of weeks. They confirmed that the problem was not my transmission but instead this tiny part that was off, so they replaced it no problem. This whole experience with AAMCO cost me $388 instead of the $6,500, the other place was quoted me. I think the other place would have changed the transmission without looking deeper so AAMCO really saved me from that. I have lived a couple of miles away from AAMCO for around 20 years but have never gone there since I thought they only did transmission work and now I know they can do everything. After this experience I am a lifelong customer!
