Emergency Bladder Surgery

My dog is currently at this clinic. He went in 7/30 to have emergency surgery for bladder stones. While I'm pleased with his progress and the daily updates, I am not pleased with all the run around I get. When I called Thursday evening I asked if I had to pay the total cost upfront when he was discharged. The woman told me I could put a down payment on the bill when I picked him up (was supposed to be the following day) and then could set up a payment plan. However when my sister took him that morning they told her they needed 50% of the lowest estimated cost before they would operate. He was already sedated, catheterized, and had his bladder emptied. I had to scramble to get $500+ dollars to them over the phone. They accepted it and proceeded with surgery. Get a call saying his bladder was pretty bruised and that he had to stay with a Catheter to keep pressure off the bladder. I still had the option of taking him home Saturday and risking bladder rupture and leakage into his abdomen which would warrant more surgery. Obviously I agreed to have him stay. Was told it was an extra $90-100/ day depending if he needed extra meds or not. Saturday I have to drop off even MORE money. Got to spend some time with him. Get a call after I left saying he is doing well but incision is a little red. They would put warm compresses on it. Fine with that. Then they said during surgery he had some pus on his bladder. Didn't tell me that originally. On a positive not his blood work was better then they expected so they adjusted the pricing of his IV fluids. Was then told he should stay until Tuesday and that it would be $150 per day. Sunday I get a call saying he is doing well and that he ate a good amount of food! Yay! Today (Monday 8/3) they call and say had a bm (still has catheter) is taking handling well. Incision still a tiny bit red, no discharge everything seems to look good. Will give him more warm compresses..... Now they said they'll call late morning or afternoon for another update tomorrow to determine if he can go home. I keep getting a run around and am not happy that he's doing so well but they 'aren't sure' about his status. I understand it's all for his overall well being but I feel like I'm just being jerked around now. Not sure how I feel about them service wise, but I am happy with the quality of care he is receiving.

We are sorry you feel this way. Maybe we can explain a little more...we are proud to be able to offer deposits for service and a payment plan. Many veterinary clinics don't offer this option. We have to have some protocols in place, especially when treating patients we have no history with. This was your first visit to our hospital so we do need a good faith payment for services. Of course your pet comes first and we work hard to be able to help people financially. Every patient is different, some patients may follow the "text book" prior to, during and post surgery or illness. Some do not. It is a day by day process and the doctor has to go by their observations and healing rate and overall condition of the patient before being confident they are OK to be discharged. We hope this has helped answer some questions.
