Port Moody Auto & Air

Will do work without your approval and present you with a bill you are not expecting

I went to Port Moody Radiator after they assured me that they could replace my head gasket. I left my car with them and after a day or two they called and told me it was good to go. Pleased with the quick turn around I paid them and left.

Later that same day I walked into my parkade to every drop of oil in my car all over the ground below my car, and running the length of the parkade. I called them, and they sent one of their mechanics over to see what happened. Turns out, when they did the oil change they did not put a cap back on or something to that effect, so all of the oil drained out. They did clean up the mess, and apologized for the mistake quite sincerely.

The next day, my check engine light was on, so I called them to ask what this could be from. They told me to come by and leave my car with them, and the would hook it up to the computer and let me know what the problem was. I went back at the end of the day to find out what they had discovered, and low and behold he pulls out a 200 bill for an O2 sensor repair. I explicitly told him I was looking for the diagnostic only as my car was still under warranty with the dealer. I was shocked that he had gone and done the work, and I told him that I was not going to pay for it because I could have had it done for free. He was not impressed, but he let me leave.

About 2 months later I smell burning oil. After looking under the hood I can see that there is a mess of oil around the silicone covered valve cover gasket. I take it back and ask him to find out why the oil is leaking. I am expecting them to locate the problem, and let me know what it is. Instead, I go back when they told me to and find that they have a $50 bill waiting for me for an engine shampoo which I did not ask for, and them telling me that the car is fine and that the last person who did an oil change did not tighten the cap all the way.

I am not impressed that again, they did work on my car that I did not ask for and I told him so. He did not understand why i was upset, and told me he would give me a "break" and not charge me for the taxes. Just wanting to be done, I paid and left.

It has since been a year and after taking my car there twice complaining of an oil leak, he says that he will no longer deal with me because I "yelled" at him. For the record, I did not - I simply asked him why he did work on my car that I did not authorize - a valid question I think.

I just had to have the valve cover gasket replaced (by another mechanic) who showed me the old one - he said that he felt that they reused the old one instead of replacing it when they did the head gasket because there was more silicone than gasket that he removed. He also told me that you do not use silicone to seal a gasket, and he showed me that they used the wrong kind of clamps in another area of the repair.

These guys are rip off artists, and they do shoddy work. I would second guess going to them for anything.
