Austin Lail - A Great Fitter!

Great experience overall with my fitter! He was knowledgeable and had me try a couple clubs I definitely was not expecting. Walked out with something very different than I expected walking in but couldn’t be more pleased!

Pros:

1) My fitter originally appeared very young and inexperienced but I quickly learned not to judge a book by a cover. My fitters knowledge and experience was excellent! He really knew his stuff for the most part and used his own experience with learning the value of club fitting so I know he believes in his product.

2) My fitter was aware of “ball count.” Doing a full bag fitting for an amateur usually means hitting 150-200 $@!#%. This is more than most amateurs hit in a week, let alone an afternoon, so it can be exhausting if you don’t pay attention to how many swings you make with each club. As you get tired your swing tends to reflect that. My fitter helped me limit the swings with each club to ensure we got accurate data as much as possible.

3) Very friendly and personable all day! I imagine as a fitter you can get a little tired watching amateur swings all day long, but my fitter was patient and friendly throughout the entire fitting experience.

4) He asked me what my goals were for the fitting and did everything he could to accommodate these goals. That really got me excited that he cared about my goals. I’ve been through other fittings where the fitter is just cranking you through and you feel like just another car in an assembly line.

Only downsides:

1) We neglected to fit a 3 metal during the original fitting so I had to return for that on a separate trip, which is not exciting since I’m out of town. As much my fault as it was my fitters though so can’t fault my fitter for this.

2) Not being able to see an actual ball flight and seeing data (i.e. spin rates, launch angles, etc) from another launch monitor that’s generally as reliable as trackman indicate what seemed to indicate the exact opposite of trackman can instill a little doubt that you’re getting the right shaft. Being able to see a real ball flight for me just gives me a lot more confidence. As great as trackman is, it’s not perfect.

Again, can’t really fault my fitter for this either. I went in knowing it was an all indoor fitting and we’d be relying solely on trackman numbers, so no complaint here, just preference for someone who doesn’t fully trust all the new technology as I’ve seen cases where it isn’t perfect (and I’m also in sales, so I filter everything with skepticism).

3) I was originally told I couldn’t get the blended iron set I wanted (Srixon U85 4-6, 7-PW 785) but when I visited the manufacturers site, I learned I could. I then had to revise my order to get the correct heads for the 4-6 iron, which took extra time and shipping cost. I asked CC to discount to account for this and they would not. Point being, while the fitter is knowledgeable and often know what they’re talking about, they aren’t perfect and don’t know everything. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.

Overall, really good experience w/ my fitter and I do recommend it w/ a couple caveats.

Caveat ONE: unless you’re a tour pro or competing at a highly competitive amateur level (like you’re a nationally ranked amateur competing a few times a month or playing college), the $500 shaft puring is a questionable value. If you have an extra $500 to throw around, go for it.

However, the only company I found who really endorsed shaft puring as a massive value add was Club Champion (and of course they would, at $50 a club to put a shaft in a little machine for two minutes to make sure it release with perfect consistency). I spoke to multiple well known instructors, people who work for Taylormade and other golf manufacturers, and could not find anyone other than CC endorsing it with any proof that it added any real value. I was also told by CC that Srixon (the manufacturer I went with for most of my bag) pures their graphite shafts they out in their metals before installing and shipping, so why do I want to pay CC to do this???

CC has an article (google it) saying it added on average 7 or 8 yards if I recall to 8 of 9 test participants (this test done at a CC facility using their computers, trackman and equipment). But I read another article with a similar test at a similar company that showed no real added value.

Moreover, with manufacturing being much more high quality and w/ more stringent requirements and consistency in quality of material these days, quality straight out of the factory is as good as it’s ever been. Also, the average amateur golfer (who hits their 6 iron anywhere from 130-180 on any given hole) doesn’t strike the ball consistently enough for a shaft puring to add any real value, and at $500, it wasn’t worth it to me and I’m a scratch golfer competing an amateur events about once a month or so.

If you’re a tour pro where a yard or two on a certain club can cost you a few or several thousand dollars in any given week, and your company that gives you clubs for free does it for you, then by all means, I’m sure it’s a value add in that case, but not for the average amateur who plays once or twice a week at $50/club on average.

Caveat TWO: all that being said regarding shaft puring, you can usually save a good bit of money ordering the set stock from the manufacturer (through CC), rather than having CC order the components separate (shafts, heads, grips all separate), and assembling them for you. The only real reason to go that route is if you’re going to have them do shaft puring. That’s the only real reason to order components rather than a stock set from the manufacturer customized to your specs.

I could’ve ordered my irons directly from Srixon and gotten the exact same set with the same shafts recommended by my fitter and grips I picked out but I appreciated the added value my fitter provided going through the fitting process with me so I had him run the order from Srixon for me and have them drop shipped to me so he get his commission. It was a win/win and just good business practice.

Again, overall a good experience and I do recommend it, especially if you’ve never had a full professional fitting.
