Previously I had done what most golfers do - bought a standard set of clubs from a sports store and adapted my swing to try to hit them properly. Of course, I had no real knowledge of what their swing weight, lie, lofts, etc. were, so I ended up doing the best I could with something designed to appeal to the general public.
