Buyer Beware

Ray,
You have asked for constructive feedback, so I will share my concerns. While I have never met you, I have used your shop, Rick and Ray’s, for eight years and came to trust Sergio and Andrew. Unfortunately, that has changed. I always felt your prices were moderate, not the cheapest, but lower than dealerships, and your customer service was above average. I now find that the conveniences you offer, such as a nice waiting room and complementary Uber rides, lulled me into complacency. It appears that whoever is now setting your prices is practicing post-COVID PRICE GOUGING. Here’s why I think this.

Because of the longstanding trust I had developed, I approved the changing of a part to fix an oil leak, assuming that the quoted cost was close to the going rate. It was not. After studying the invoice at length (which also included an oil change), I called the Nissan dealership and found that the part that was changed almost never fails. If it had failed, the dealership would have charged me $1,198 ($780 for the part) to replace it. Your shop charged $1,823 ($1200 for the part), a difference of $625. But most likely, according to the dealership, it was probably just the O-rings that needed to be replaced for around $500.

In hindsight, I should have lived with the leak for a while and shopped around. Shame on me. But since I was due for an oil change, I decided to have that done at the same time. That oil change cost me $210. In 2021, your shop charged just $56 for the same oil change, a $154 increase in three years. Furthermore, my 6/2021 statement itemized the cost of the oil and filter. Recent invoices do not do this. According to my 3/2024 invoice, I paid $124 for 5 quarts of oil and an oil filter. A quick internet search clearly shows the oil and filter should have cost no more than $50. That makes for a $74 markup for supplies, on top of which you charged $86 for labor. From what I could tell, in 2021 I paid little to no markup. I had no reason to think the price of an oil change would be inflated by 275%. This is why I make the claim of post-COVID PRICE GOUGING. Prior to posting this review, I sent two emails sharing these same concerns, hoping for fair treatment. I never received a reply. So now, the shame is on you.
