Questionable Morals

During a recent furnace inspection the tech "locked out" (meaning disabled) my furnace, supposedly due to "safety reasons" (said CO was leaking at up to 48 ppm). However, when the tech was telling me about the leak and "required repair" ($900) he did NOT tell me he had disabled my furnace. Again in the follow-up email with 16 attachments including a picture showing a CO reading of 11ppm, there was no mention of the furnace being disabled. However, to be fair buried within the paragraph of service performed on the invoice was the statement "locked out due to safety concerns".
Well, this was done 2 days prior to temps in the single digits! No notice that they turned off my furnace immediately prior to a winter storm!
I spoke with one of the owners who found this perfectly acceptable (safety first!).
I have always had a CO monitor right outside the furnace room (less than 10 feet from the furnace) and I placed another (that tracks "max" recorded levels) IMMEDIATELY in front of the furnace. After almost a week of the furnace running since their visit, the "max" reading is still sitting at zero ppm.
I'm not saying there might not have been an 11ppm reading, but I do not consider that significant enough to disable someone's furnace - particularly without telling them. For someone not comfortable with gas lines and opening furnaces, you would have had to do what others here state and get a second contractor to come out to fix things.
So why bother with a company that you won't want to use in the end? Just start with a reputable company to begin with.
