MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan

Improvement After Changes in Management

Both of my parents lived at MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care until they passed away this spring. They were there for about two years and there were kind of two very different periods. They hired Scott as the director and he came on board last fall. It's gotten better since they hired him. Prior to that, it was pretty rough. My parents had two cats and the animal care was terrible even though they charged $400 a month. They never fed my father enough food, as he was a pretty big guy. When I took him in he weighed about 200 pounds and in about a year and a half, he lost 35 pounds. From my perspective, the issue was that they were giving the same amount of food to everyone no matter how big they were, and there were a lot of women or smaller people there. My dad had some dementia, so he wasn't able to request more food. Communications were poor before Scott got there, but it did improve. We often didn't get info from the management. We would typically find out what was going on through the caregivers, and to put it in perspective my wife was up there to see my parents probably 2-3 times a week or more. I'd try to get there at least once a week. So it wasn't like we weren't there a lot because we were, but whenever there was an issue that needed to be addressed and we found about it through the caretakers, we would have to bring the issue to the management team ourselves to get things resolved. There were lots of different people there as far as the caregivers, and a lot of churn, so things were always changing. There were a handful of caregivers that were very, very good, but some that were not at all. Due to the turnover, it was kind of hit or miss whether you had someone good or not. MorningStar Jordan has some pretty low ratings here in the community. When Scott came in they also brought in a new person for the memory care unit and she did a lot better as well. The prior person was remarkably bad. As I said, however, things did improve after the changes in management. In the end, I think they generally took care of my parents reasonably well which is why we kept them there.
