Overall very thorough driver fitting. Customer and fitter should have aligned early in the session on pricing & budget.

For my driver fitting Taylor was very knowledgeable, and he was committed to ensuring we found the best possible combination of shaft and head to maximize the results from my 15 hndcp swing (which needs work). During the first 30-45 minutes we narrowed down shaft options and found the best fit (regret I do not recall the model; began with an N). Then we used that shaft to test 6 or 7 different heads. By the end of our 90 minute session we agreed on the “N” shaft and the Ping G425 Max head. Then Taylor outlined the pricing. I expected the $150 fitting fee (of course), but I did not expect a full $500 charge for the head alone, which from all other golf outlets is priced at $500 with stock shaft and grip; I assume that stock shaft and grip have some level of cost attached, which case the head alone should be below $500. Then came the cost of the N shaft: $390 for the shaft alone. Add $12 for a grip, and my new driver was $900. I expected Club Champion to provide shafts which are above and beyond the industry standard, and was prepared for perhaps $100-150 up charge for a premium shaft. Perhaps my mistake for not mentioning my cost/budget expectations early in the meeting. That said, while many golfers in the Charlotte market may have unlimited golf budgets, many of us do not, and Club Champion should be up front early in the process to explain performance vs price. If Taylor knew my budget, he likely would not have chosen that shaft. When I learned of the $390 shaft cost (at the very end of our session), we were now beyond our 90 minute appt time, and I was mindful that I waited over 3 weeks for my session, so I knew the fitting team was fully booked and did not want to monopolize Taylor’s time. We then spent 2 minutes checking the Golf Galaxy site to find a standard Ping shaft offering which might match the weight and flex of the $390 shaft we tested. We quickly agreed on a shaft with a $18 up charge, and finished the order. Considering the high level of importance Club Champion places on the driver shaft, it was unfortunate that my final purchase comes with a shaft we never actually tested. Hopefully I will be satisfied with the driver when it arrives in 5-7 weeks.
