Miami Electric Masters

Generator Cord wired to Commercial Transfer Switch

Miami Electric Masters Company installed an electrical panel in my home last year.

They did such an excellent job that I called them when I needed electrical work done to get ready for hurricane season.

Last month I purchased a 50amp 13,000 watt generator and needed a heavy duty generator cord attached to a commercial grade transfer switch that I have been using with a smaller 20 amp 6500 watt generator for the past 27 years.

I needed 4 wire, 4 gauge generator cord wired to the transfer switch and a 50amp plug attached to the end of the 4 gauge generator cord in order to plug into the 50amp 13,000 watt generator.

Miami Electric Masters sent out a veteran Electrician named Emmanuel (Manny) to review the job and go over all the electrical work that needed to be done.

The next day Manny went to work on the electrical project. He removed the old 4 wire 10 gauge generator cord which was wired to the transfer switch and installed the brand new 4 wire 4 gauge generator cord. That heavy gauge wire was quite a challenge to work with because 4 wire 4 gauge wire is very thick copper wire.

Manny did an excellent job of wiring the 4 gauge generator cord to the commercial grade transfer switch and also installed a heavy duty grounding block in order to make sure the generator cord was well grounded.

Manny attached a heavy duty 50amp plug to the other end of the 4 gauge generator cord. Once again that 4 wire 4 gauge copper wire was challenged to work with. When the work was done I had a 50amp 13,000 watt generator that powered the central air conditioning unit in my house, as well as the well water pump, the refrigerator and a few other important items in the house needed in the aftermath of a hurricane. Excellent work.

Manny also manufactured a short (3 foot long) adapter cord, he made from spare 4 wire 4 gauge electrical cord.

This 4 foot adapter cord Manny made, had a plug on one end that would fit into the 20amp outlet in my old 6500 watt generator and a 50amp outlet on the other end, that the 50amp plug from the new generator cord which led to the transfer switch.

With this heavy duty 4 foot adapter cord, my old 20 amp 6500 watt generator could be used as a backup generator, in the event the 50amp 13,000 watt generator is ever out of service.

Excellent electrical work by a very knowledgeable electrician, from an excellent company.
