Not what we expected!

I wish I could say I am as pleased as others with their reviews. My experience with Ripano was a pleasure until the day after my installation when I could not get my counter tops or island to shine as I expected they would. They had a dull appearance. I thought it may have been a haze from the sealer applied the day before so I tried to wash them. As I washed them, I noticed what appeared to be scratches and cuts throughout the entire slabs which was causing the dull appearance. I called Ripano and was advised that this was normal and expected with this stone. I had contemplated 2 different finishes. I discussed the different finishes with the staff and advised that we wanted the smooth, glossy look so went with the gloss finish. I was able to see 1 slab (needed 2) in the showroom. On its side, in the showroom lighting, the slab appeared exactly as I expected...shiny and glossy. After largely disappointed in the finish when installed, I asked to have someone come take a look at it. I was advised that the granite looked exactly as expected and that my selected stone always finished that way. I don't question people more experienced than I am, however, my disappointment is that not once in my 3 visits to the showroom or several conversations with the staff, did anybody advise that the stone would not finish with the glossy, smooth look I advised that I wanted. I was apparently supposed to ask the staff to lay the slab down flat and take it outside in the light to see the actual finish. I consider myself to be a well educated shopper and did hours of research and shopping to make sure my various kitchen selections had the exact look I wanted. I paid extra for an upgraded stone and for a 15 year warranty. I did not take a cheap way out. My granite is now largely disappointing. It never shines as I expected and always has a dull, hazy or 'dirty' appearance. As an experienced staff, if you know the granite does not finish with the high gloss look expected with granite, all I would have expected was to be informed of that so I could make an appropriate decision. I may have changed the stone or changed the finish with the proper knowledge. Ripano advises that there is nothing they can do to change the appearance. Replacing them is at my own expense. They offered to change the finish to the antiqued look but that would require removal of all 3 large pieces of granite which could cause damage to my new cabinets and cause my tiling contractor to be rescheduled, causing significant delays in completion and additional time without a functional kitchen. All of this could have been avoided with proper advisement of how the granite would finish. The common customer shopping for granite does not know or should not expect to have to ask for a slab weighing hundreds of pounds to be moved outside and laid flat to see the finish. If you're shopping for granite, do your due diligence. Bring a flashlight for appropriate lighting or have the slab moved to an area with strong lighting. Have the slab laid flat as it shows completely different on its side. Don't expect to be provided the knowledge you should be provided.

At Ripano Stoneworks we go to great lengths to ensure each customer knows exactly what they are purchasing. We feel that it is important that every customer view and select the exact slab that will go in their home as opposed to simply choosing from a small sample. Unfortunately, some customers do not view the slabs as closely during the selection process as they do once it is installed in their home. Admittedly, the lighting in our warehouse is often not as good as it is in a newly remodeled kitchen but we never deny anyone the opportunity to spend as much time examining the slabs they want. On many occasions we have moved slabs outside or closer to natural light for customers who want to take a closer look. With regards to the finish on this particular counter, the owner of Ripano has personally visited the job site to ensure there are no defects. The finish on the stone is exactly as it was when the customer selected the slab. While there is some "pitting" on the slab (which the customer refers to as "scratches and cuts") this is a normal occurrence with natural stone countertops.

Quoting the Marble Institute of America:

"Pitting of the countertop surface,
particularly in granite material, is a
commonly seen characteristic on natural
stone. Granites are made up of several
different minerals, each mineral having a
different hardness. Granites contain quartz,
feldspars, biotite, amphibole, ferrous
titanium oxides, and other mineral
combinations. On the Mohs Scale (see insert
on page 7), diamonds are the hardest
mineral, with a rating of 10. Quartz and
feldspar have a hardness of 6.5 to 7 and are
very durable. Biotite (also known as mica) on
the other hand is very soft (2.5) and flakes
easily. All true granites have biotite in their
composition. Because biotite is relatively soft
and flaky, the first few layers are removed
during the polishing process, causing pits
throughout the slab. Some granites have
more biotite throughout their composition
than others. The higher the biotite content of
the stone, the more pits it will have. Most
polished igneous rocks will have varying
degrees of pits, depending on the amount of
biotite, muscovite, and phlogopite in their
composition.
The pits do not make the granite less durable
or otherwise inferior, and do not in
themselves qualify the slab for replacement.
Pits are common in all granites and should be
expected when dealing with a natural,
polished stone containing several types of
minerals of varying hardness. It is usually best
to not attempt repair of pits, as most repair
techniques will not cosmetically improve the
countertop. "

As a gesture of good faith, Ripano offered to modify the finish of the counter from polished to antiqued at no charge to help minimize the appearance of naturally occurring pits. Additionally, Ripano offered to replace the entire kitchen with a different stone and absorb 80% of the cost.
