An Albatross

Since 1994, I spent about $30k on lessons and videos plus another $20k on clubs trying to improve my handicap. Furthermore I have been fit by multiple fitters for Callaway, Titleist, Hogans, PXG (twice), TaylorMade and even 1 Iron Single Length. Some of these fitters are very well known.

It has taken me a while, but I finally found a fitter and a fitting company who will take me to the next level: Brian Ennis at Club Champion in Plano, TX. Brian quickly identified how he could improve my accuracy and distance using Club Champion’s technology including Trackman.

For 3 1/2 hours we went thru roughly 5 shafts, 7 iron heads, then putter, next drivers and more shafts and then wedges. Considering the amount of shafts and all the various club heads at his disposal, it was amazing to me that he could dial it in so quickly.

One thing I noticed during the process is he was agnostic on all of the products. I never had the feeling that he was trying to push me into a certain brand or price point. In fact, he tested me with my custom fit putter and said it was perfect except it needed a smidge more loft which he corrected on the spot.

What about hybrids? Because I will pick up more distance with the driver and irons, Brian recommended we wait until I have played with the new sticks because my needs will change. The extra time will NOT cost extra.

What about the lie angle? Over past 5 years, I have been fit as much as 2 degrees up to 2 degrees flat! This time I tested standard. But he wants me to play with them and he will bend them if necessary at no charge.

What about my over the top swing path with the driver? I have always been more over the top with the driver even though I tend to hit it in the middle. Brian quickly gave me the solution that all my previous teachers didn’t. I immediately stopped the out to in and picked up more swing speed. His solution? Sorry but you will have to go see him for the answer. His coaching was included in the price! BTW the fitter in the other bay (his brother) was also coaching up his clients.

The cost of the fitting? I have paid less and I have paid more. Club Champion charges a very fair price for the time, technology and expertise.

Club cost? You get what you pay for. And that means more than off the rack pricing. Why? Because the stock shafts in most clubs only cost a few bucks to produce. If you want shafts that provide superior spin, launch angles and accuracy then you will pay more. Also, pay the extra $ for the SST Pure shaft process. You won’t regret it.

Overall? A Double Eagle. An Albatross.
