Windows, Windows, Windows...
I had 42 windows to install in my 104 yo house for my whole house renovation project. I interviewed several companies including all the major players in the DC Metro Area... HCR, Thompson Creek, NuLook, Renewal, etc. I also did a fair amount research comparing U-Factors, solar heat gain coefficient, company and manufacturer warranties, company ratings, price, etc. It was a daunting task, but considering I would be paying tens of thousands of dollars on the investment, it was worth my time. In the end, I went with HCR... and I'm glad I did. Since it was a whole home renovation with an addition, I had to find a company that could provide just the right types of windows. HCR's window offerings were the most flexible and gave me what I wanted for my particular situation. And I have to say that it all boiled down to my sales rep, Chris Dobbin, who worked with me for a fair, negotiated price that I couldn't pass up, and he continually followed up and kept the ball rolling through the entire extended post-deposit, installation process. Needless to say, it was excruciating, but worth it in the end. I had 3 different sets of guys come out to do the measuring. The types of windows that I ordered were a mix of new construction and replacement. It was pulling teeth to get someone from the back office to call me back with updates on build status from the manufacturer. There were issues with scheduling an install date, and miscommunications/misunderstandings on what HCR would do vs. my general contractor in terms of trim and finishing. I think the confusion and run around was a result of my new and replacement window requirements. If this had been a simple replacement window job that followed the format of the 95% of their other window jobs, it would have gone much smoother. When all was said and done, if it wasn't for Chris and the onsite project foreman Joshua during the actual installation, I would have cancelled the contract because everything that could go wrong, did. In addition to all of the issues mentioned, when the installers came out, the number of windows was wrong, one window didn't have the right grids, and one window was the wrong size despite being measured by 3 different measurement guys. My install date even got pushed back a day because of late season snow! Ugghhh!!! But that wasn't their fault. In the end, Chris did some leg work behind the scenes for me and was able to cut through some of the red tape to help me get in touch with the people that I needed to talk to so I could get the windows installed. And once onsite, the installation foreman, Joshua, worked with me to devise ways to solve the onsite issues so that minimal time was wasted and everyone would be happy in the end. The install crew was quick, professional and clean. It took a day and a half to install and trim out the 42 windows, but since it's a whole house renovation and I'm not actually living there at the moment, that extra time didn't impact me. Needless to say, the windows are now in, and they are gorgeous. They really do bring out the beauty of my home and once all the renovations are completed, I'm sure they'll be more than I bargained for.
