Mr. Handyman of Northeast Johnson County

Good Marks For Effort But Ultimately They Did Not Solve The Problem

This was not my first time using Mr. Handyman of Northeast Johnson County. I have used their services a few times before and had good experiences with them. This past time was the exception. I have continued to use their services because the staff is friendly and accommodating. When I call in, they can schedule appointments quickly for me. Their pricing is reasonable. This past time when there was a problem the girls at the office said the part and their work was under warranty, so they did not charge any service fee for the technician to come back. However, with the problem that just occurred with their technician, I most likely would not call them for any electrical or wiring work again. This last experience they did not solve the problem that I contracted them to solve. The office was very good about the whole experience, but the technician was not. I had them come out to wire one of the camera doorbells at my son’s house. The technician did show up on time. In fact, he was a bit early, so I had to rush to my son’s house earlier than planned since it was before the time frame that he was to be there. He, the technician, said the first time that it had to be wired through a light in the basement. On his first visit, it did not work after he left so, I had to call and get them to come back out again. They sent the same technician. The second time the technician came out he was able to get it to work temporarily. It worked for about 20 minutes then it stopped working again. A friend of mine who knows about wiring came over to assist me. After several hours of looking for information online, we started at the circuit breaker and followed each and every wire through the rafters in the ceiling. We figured out where the problem was. The technician never even bothered to look at all the wiring from the circuit breaker. On his first visit to my son’s house, he even said that he had never wired a camera doorbell, this was his first time. There were black and white wiring to hook up the camera doorbell. The transformer has white, green and black wiring. The white wire was not correctly wired which was causing the problem. My friend and I had to do the research and gain information to correct this since the technician did not. The technician was willing to do the work, but he just did not do a good job, or he did not have the level of knowledge to do it properly. The second time he came out he simply said, “this is my last option, I am going to do it this way” and it still did not work. It was $185 for the service and on that first visit, I gave him a $20 tip. Although they did not charge for the second call to the house to try to fix it, I do feel that it would be good business practice since he did not finish the installation properly and since it did not work after his second attempt that they would refund a portion of the total cost. I know they need their money for doing work, but since he was unable to do the work properly, I feel they should refund a portion of it as a gesture of good faith. I would also like to see them train their employees more. These camera doorbells are becoming very popular and I am certain they will get other calls for this and their employees should know how to do it and should know to look at the circuit breaker and wiring to make sure everything is going to be wired properly. I think they should also consider if they need to send someone out a second time for the same service that they should send a different technician for a second set of eyes on the problem. Hopefully, the second person may be able to see what the first technician missed. Again, this was not my first time using them. I had them out previously to put drywall on the ceiling and it turned out perfectly fine. The workers were prompt, polite and professional and the job was done well. Would I use them again? I most likely will use them again depending on the nature of the job, but I would not have them come back out for anything electrical or with the wiring. I do feel that their office staff is exceptional, and the scheduling is all good. So, if you do need work done then Mr. Handyman of Northeast Johnson County will do good work for most services, just be wary of anything with electrical or wiring.
