Quality First Plumbing & Heating

Overpriced for a simple repair that Youtube could teach to fix in 20min

After I installed 2 basins in my bathroom using the older original brass pop up drain assemblies it came with, the drain washer and tail piece leading to p-trap leaked. I thought I installed correctly using putty under flange, plumbers tape on tail piece connections with all connections on tight, it still leaked. Not sure what I was doing wrong, I looked online and called Quality First Plumbing in Aurora, CO. They were avl to come out the next day (Sunday). On Sunday a young man came and spent ~20min assessing the problem. He told me he's not seen a pop up like this before and took pictures. Unsure if they had the part, the young man sent the pics to his supervisor and called him. (who knew a pop up drain assembly could be this complicated?) Not sure if they could find "the special part," he told me he would call the next day to let me know. While he was there I also wanted him to tell me what it would cost "to repair" a toilet tank assembly because my tank was leaking down the drain, causing it to refill every few minutes. He looked at the tank and asked me if I'd like to replace the water ctrl valve to the toilet tank. I said no, there's nothing wrong with it. (It didn't even look old). After looking into the toilet tank, he said the tank seal looked like it wasn't sitting on drain seal and that may be causing it to leak. He adjusted it and readjusted the fill tube. When he was through, the tank could no long hold water at all. He found the quote on his I-pad and said it would cost $530-$600 "to replace" the toilet tank assembly! I laughed and told him I needed to catch my breathe after that quote.... I told him a toilet only costs around $100..? He just shrugged. The next day I went to Home Depot and bought 2 pop up assemblies for $19/ea and replaced the old ones. Took about 45min. The old brass assemblies were the problem to start with................................ He called like he said he would and said, they found the part... I said never mind. It's fixed. I should have asked what that part would cost for him to put in and repair..... My guess is a lot.... My honest opinion about today's plumbing companies is they are all performing legal robberies on the public. What is worse, they are teaching a young generation, as in my case, a scout sent out with little experience or knowledge but only to survey the possible big score on a homeowner. Charging outrageous prices for things we never paid so much for before so never thought we had to learn. Luckily pop up drain assemblies and toilet tank assemblies for most folks (like changing your car's oil) are things we've already done at some point in our lives. But imagine the 80yo's and older group of people or the young just starting out in life who are at these unscrupulous greedy companies mercy.. Moral to my story is start learning how to use YouTube. There is a how to on just about everything you want to fix. Just type in "How to fix _______?" You may even be surprised how easy it is to do yourself. It may take you a little longer but well worth the effort. Learn and save thousands.

Hi Jim!
Very happy to know you are handy and you were able to get the leak fixed yourself in short order. I hope that you are able to find a licensed and insured contractor in the future that better fits your budget while I do hope you never need it!
