ATA Career Education

I graduated, but there were issues.

I was in the second class at ATA Career Education, so perhaps some of what I am saying is possibly related to them being relatively new at the time, and maybe experiencing some growing pains. I had a day job during the week when I first enrolled and I was promised that school would not interfere with my job - that I could take all my classes at night. That went out the window after the first semester. Then I was told that I had to come to class at 1:00 in the afternoon. Luckily, I was able to rearrange my work schedule. I did graduate ATA, and I did have a pretty high GPA. I was able to obtain employment, so that was good. I passed the NCLEX exam. But I feel like a lot of what I learned, I had to learn on my own. I think some of the professors were not certified or trained teachers, but just people who worked in the field and were hired on the basis of their work skills, but not their teaching ability. For example, some professors just read off the PowerPoint slides. I thought those classes were a waste of time. I did not need that. I can read all by myself. What I needed and wanted was somebody to teach me, to instruct me. There were exceptions. My English professor was just wonderful - very knowledgeable! The same with my OB Maternity professor. They were both very professional. My Pediatrics instructor was wearing about five hats at the time, and she was stretched to the maximum. Our clinical rotations were not well scheduled at all. They were very hit and miss. And they were not set up in a manner most beneficial to us. As I said before, some of this could have just been related to growing pains, and hopefully better relationships have been established now with the professional community. But I would not feel comfortable about recommending ATA Career Education until I knew those issues had been addressed.
