R&D Heating and Cooling

Disappointing and lacking good customer service.

I was a loyal customer of R&D Heating, Cooling & Electric for several years but I was very frustrated in my last dealing with them. They were great when our outdoor air conditioner had a convoluted problem that required multiple trips for diagnosis until someone finally figured it out and fixed the problem. After that, it worked great. Then for a while we had an annual maintenance agreement and the woman who would come out was great. During one visit, she noticed that the water heater might need an expansion tank but not right away, so she wrote up an estimate for three hundred fifty dollars and filed it at the office with the advice that the quote might get higher when the actual work was done. Sometime later, I noticed a leak from the sump pump and, thinking it might have something to do with the need for a new expansion tank, called the office and had a very good conversation with Chris. He pulled our file and saw the quote. He agreed to send someone out to take a look. That's when the problem started. The tech who came out said the tank just needed a pressure relief valve. So he installed one. Unfortunately, the valve blew immediately because the pressure from the street was more than it could handle. The tech wasn't sure what the next step was and couldn't advise me on my next step. He didn't know if I should get the expansion tank, if should I call the city water authority, or what I should do. Then he charged me the previously quoted amount of three hundred fifty dollars just for the pressure relief valve. This didn't feel right to me, so I asked to speak to someone higher up. He called the R&D business manager and she was terribly impolite, rude, and disrespectful over the phone to him. I could hear every word she said and was dismayed by her bad attitude. Finally, she told the tech to credit me ninety dollars off for the visit. After that, I called another plumbing company which ended up installing an expansion tank and another pressure relief valve for about one thousand dollars. Their quote was clearly itemized to me upfront. But now I had spent one thousand dollars plus two hundred eighty. So I called the business manager at R&D myself. She wasn't helpful at all and I didn't get anywhere with her. Again, she had a terrible attitude towards me and I just didn't feel good about it. I asked to speak to someone higher up. She finally agreed to look into it and call me back. After looking into it, they did give some money back, but the whole episode left me feeling bad. It just didn't feel right at all. It's too bad because all the technicians I've used over the years from R&D have been great. But I won't be calling R&D Heating, Cooling & Electric again. Nor would I recommend them.
