Choate's Air Conditioning, Heating, & Plumbing came out to service my air conditioner. This system is a split AC system. The service technician was polite and nice and that part was perfectly fine. He did seem unsure of himself with the diagnosis of this system and what was wrong with it. He did get on the phone and talk to someone else who helped him through this service call and I have no problem with that at all. He diagnosed the problem as being the control board which fried during a power surge and I think that diagnosis was correct. He then gave me a quote for the control board which was $1,500 with an additional labor charge of $380. I found this unacceptable. I purchased this system online for $700 and when I received an email from Choate's outlining the cost and repair I looked up the part on the manufacturer's website and it was $120.00! The markup for this from Choate's was 11 times the cost and that is totally unacceptable! I have decided to order the part myself and install it using online video tutorials. I am certain it may take me longer than the 15 minutes that it took the video guy to install but I am ok with that. I am also ok with paying Choate's fee for the service and diagnosis.
