Not satisfied.

We are disappointed with the first year of your service. We have a lot of crabgrass in our backyard and it was starting in our front yard also. Your technician said it was because of the weather but I thought you should have been able to do something about it. There were also weeds that were not killed. We will try you for 1 more year to see what happens.

Thanks for your honest comments. We appreciate that you are willing to go for another season. Control of weeds and crabgrass is not as easy with Ontario's Cosmetic pesticide Ban. Weed treatment products work slowly. Some weeds may turn black but the product mainly affect the lops- the visible leaves. The roots are still alive and will regrow, especially established weeds. The weed product does better on young seedlings. Over time, as we prevent the seedlings from maturing, the lawn will get better. Those mature weeds will take some time to go, sometimes it will take a couple of years or more. And some weeds do not respond at all. Keeping your lawn healthy and green will help crowd out some of these weeds. A thick green lawn will mean that weeds will be less noticeable.
As far as crabgrass is concerned- please be aware that the normal weed products even before the ban do not work on crabgrass. The weather this summer did make crabgrass more prolific than in many other years.
The best strategy for crabgrass is to mow high (3" mowing height) and to make the lawn nice and dense and thick. Crabgrass grows in parts of the lawn that 1) have warm soil- so often along the edges of drives, walks etc where the asphalt or concrete absorbs heat, transfers it to the adjacent soil. Crabgrass is most often a problem along the edges. Make sure to keep the lawn edges mowed high. 2) Crabgrass also grows in sunny lawn areas where the lawn is thinner due to insect damage or other problems. These areas should be seeded to increase lawn density. And if insects are present they should be treated as best as is possible with the limited products available.
There are organic crabgrass preventers that can be added to your program. These are not foolproof- but should reduce the number of crabgrass seeds that germinate starting in late June. Please
Please contact us if you would like to add crabgrass treatment to your program. or if you have questions about crabgrass and what can be done.
