Shelbyville Road Veterinary

I can't say NO loud enough

This is not my usual vet, but it was a lot closer to my house, so I thought I'd give them a try. In short, I will NOT be going back, and I am so frustrated as to go so far as to write this review advising everyone else to avoid them.

The long story is as follows: My chihuahua had some dental issues, so I needed to get his teeth cleaned. He was up to date on EVERYTHING, and I planned to just get the dental work done there and then renew all his shots, heartworm tests, etc... at his regularly appointed check up in two months. My previous vet had filled our heartworm script for us in house, and we got his flea and tick medication from Chewy. Shelbyville road "doesn't recognize" flea and tick medication unless it's filled by a vet (i.e. NOT chewy), so they made me purchase their own in house flea and tick medication because they "didn't have a record" of my dog being medicated monthly.

They also required that I get him up to date for all of his shots and heartworm test (2 months early) or they wouldn't work on his teeth. His teeth were in really bad shape, so I made a panic decision to go ahead with everything instead of just going back to our normal vet. BAD IDEA. I ended up spending over $700 in total. I had expected around $300-400 for his teeth, but the extra $300 I spent was completely unnecessary.

The vet himself seems very knowledgeable, but does not have the personality for customer service. He was gruff and impersonal, which is fine, but some of the staff weren't much better.

Because they overlapped the services and tests I needed, I still had several months left of heartworm medication, so I did not fill the rest of my prescription with them. When I was down to a month left, I tried to refill my prescription through Chewy, and Shelbyville REFUSED to send them the prescription for Heartgard. At first they told Chewy they wouldn't send an electronic script and I would need to come in for a paper copy. When I did request a paper copy, they again refused to write it and would only fill it in house. The problem with their in house refill is that it was $20 more than I could get it elsewhere (even with the rebate), and they again refused to fill it even in house because it had been more than 6 months since Tito's heartworm test and they "didn't have a record" of him having been medicated since then.

I just got off the phone with them, and I was told my options were go ahead and get his heartworm test done early or wait a few months until it was time for his annual test again. They literally told me to NOT GIVE MY DOG HEARTWORM MEDICATION for a few months and refused to write me a prescription for more unless I pay for another test, which, again, has been negative within the last 12 months.
