My husband's grandparents taught school on a Navajo and Zuni reservation. While there, they were given a hand-woven saddle blanket, which has been passed down in the family for several generations. When we got it, it was in very bad condition. It was stiff, and soiled, and stained, and parts of the edges had become undone. We found out that there were three office people at the company. The lady who runs the office is a beautiful person, and she keeps things running on an even keel. Then there is one younger man, and an older man. You hardly ever see the older man. He is a somewhat reticent, but he is also a master craftsman when it comes to rugs and to weaving. He offered us two choices on the Oriental rug - machine rebinding, or hand reweaving. He said that the hand-reweaving was more expensive. We chose that option, and he said, "Good!" Then, he did a wonderful job of restoring that rug, working by hand. We remembered that experience when we took the Navajo blanket to him. He was fascinated by the piece. He cleaned it, and he got every stain and spot out of it. He managed to get rid of all the stiffness, and he made it supple again. He even managed to get all the edges rewoven. He did an exemplary job, and I do not think that anyone could have done a better job. We have a friend in Albuquerque who used to work at a museum there. She is elated over the condition of the blanket! The colors are vibrant now, and the condition is unbelievably improved.
