Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning & Electrical

Uninsured and Unprofessional

On April 14th, 2021, my mother-in-law ( a 76 year old woman on oxygen and other medical issues) contacted Abacus to have the AC unit for her first-floor condo unit serviced. Even though the unit was operational, the technician convinced her to replace the unit as the unit was R-22 and she would breathe easier with a new air handling system.

The following morning, an estimator arrived, gave her an estimate, and made her pay for the full amount of the new unit up front. That afternoon, Abacus sent installers to demo the old system and install the new system. After demo was complete and installation of the new unit had started, Silvano Rodriquez called the installers and informed them that the job had to be stopped as Abacus insurance did not cover them installing a system in a multi-family dwelling.

The installers then removed the new equipment, and the old equipment was re-installed. At that point, she contacted me as she was confused, stressed, and knew she had already paid in full for the job. When I arrived, the installers reluctantly called Mr. Rodriguez and he just said they were not insured, she would get her money back in a few days, and he would not talk anymore. At that point we called her bank, how immediately placed a hold on the ACH transfer so that Abacus could not receive the funds.

After multiple attempts, I was able to speak with someone in customer service about this issue. He again noted that Abacus was not insured to work on a multi-family dwelling. I pointed out that his company was still working on the system, and in fact was going to do all the work that it would take to install a new system, but instead was re-installing an old system that had been demo’d (and poorly treated during the demo). He assured me that the system would perform better than when they arrived. A short time later, the installers left. The system was inoperable. The thermostat had a message stating that there was no power. While trying to contact Abacus, I verified that the disconnect for the compressor was inserted correctly and the breaker was on. After a long delay, Abacus sent a technician to troubleshoot the issue. After multiple hours, we discovered that the control power wires in the air handling unit were not correctly re-installed, the power wires to the compressor were not reconnected (they were left dangling inside the air handling unit and pushed to the back where they were hidden), the drain pan was not reconnected, the cover to the air handling unit was not correctly installed, and significant amounts of trash were left behind. The wiring issues were corrected, but the remaining items have yet to be corrected. I have made multiple attempts to rectify the situation with Abacus. Mr. O’Neill (the owner) and Mr. Rodriquez (the license holder) have both been non-responsive.

I was contacted by a Tony Pitino, who informed me that all the issues encountered were the fault of Abacus. He also informed me that insurance coverage was not the real reason that the job was stopped, but never gave a reasonable explanation of why Abacus stopped the job. He also informed me that Abacus was unwilling to do anything to rectify the issues caused by them. He did state that Abacus is unable to work on multi-family dwellings. I would avoid this company at all costs.
