Shelly's School for Dogs

Pay close attention to the Man Behind the Curtain, Dorothy. Don't be fooled.

How I wish I didn't have to write this. How i wish we never bought into the hype. Until recently we bragged to anyone with a dog who would listen about Green Leaf Pet Resort. That was, until the man behind the curtain was exposed for who he really is. I'll try and be brief, and in fact have to be careful because Shelly Leibowitz threatened that, like others before me, if I pursued any action against him he would make me "live to regret it." I went with my daughter and her pup for a training "interview" with Mr. Leibowitz at which time he said he didn't take just any dog, only ones he met personally and knew could be trained. He vowed that after four weeks with him (and he said 'him' as he bragged about how many police dogs he'd trained) her dog would come out fully trained. That was important as she's a nurse who works 3-4 12 1/2 hour shifts a week and didn't have time to properly train her. She knew how - we'd had several trained dogs - she simply didn't have time. After dropping the dog off at 7A and picking her up at 4P four days a week for four weeks, one would expect that with that kind of consistency, the dog would come out trained, as promised - especially with a price tag of $2400. Only she didn't come out trained. When we went for the one-on-one graduation session with the trainer, we were told and shown she knew basic commands (sit, stay, come, heel) Great, right? Nope. He then said she had to be worked with three, preferably four 15-20 minute sessions a day. That's not what we were told or sold. If she had that kind of time she'd have saved $2400 and done it herself. It occurred to me only then that the days I dropped the dog off (and it was during Covid so we couldn't go in we milled around outside) I'd see at least a dozen dogs being dropped off for training - sometimes as many as 20 in a day. I know this is because I talked to other owners while we waited. But there were just two trainers. that didn't add up, so I asked one of the trainers straight up how two trainers could handle that many dogs in a day and he threw up his hands and said, each dog gets at least one 15 minute session but they shoot for at least two a day. The rest of the time the poor babies are crated. A nine hour day of what one thought was training was actually an 8+ hour day of the poor babies being left idle in a crate. I later called the GM at the Millstone facility (we were in Ocean) who admitted that during Covid there was a huge influx of puppies (all adopted during the pandemic adoption boom) and they had trouble hiring. My answer to that was, then just say no. Stop allowing people to sign up for training if you can't do your job as promised. But Shelly never said no. All he ever said was, sign here, here and here and go pay the girl over there. I would call it simple greed but it's worse than greed. It's abusive to the animals and dishonest to the owners who love them, in my opinion (I have to say that lest Mr. Leibowitz come for me) I still run into owner after owner at various dog parks who all have a similar story. I asked the GM, who was lovely and sympathetic to please refund at least part of my daughter's hard earned money so she could hire a proper trainer. She promised to see what she could do and call me back. But it wasn't she who called back, it was the man behind the curtain and that's when he got loud and threatening and then summarily hung up on me. Not very professional, not very adult, not the actions of a man who has nothing to hide. Well, the curtain has been pulled back. BTW a couple of things to think about - other doggy daycares in the area allow you access to their cameras to check in on your pet or offer to send pics. Green Leaf doesn't. Read the reviews of former employees online and you may understand why. You might also want to ask yourself why a man who portends to be, according to his Facebook profile, an "expert behaviorist and animal trainer for more than 40 years," is currently being sued by a man who says in court papers he was lawfully on Mr. Leibowitz's home property when he was "attacked and bitten by an unsupervised, uncontrolled and unleashed, bull mastif," according to the complaint filed in Superior Court of NJ. BTW the one star is for the staff, who are lovely and seemingly caring dog lovers. Nice to know someone in that building is.
