Express Electrical Service

Double charge with NO regrets . .

I phoned Express Electrical Services and a technician was scheduled and arrived on time. A very pleasant/smart young man. I explained my problem and after checking a few things he quickly made the diagnosis, I need a new ballast. (total charge - a little less than $200.) He told me he would find out how much a new one would be and someone would let me know with an estimate. $383.68 included another charge for diagnosis of $157.50. I called explained the double charge and was told: "that was how it was!". Almost $500.00 to replace a $132.24 part ($80.27 on the internet) . . NOT a good experience. Seek help elsewhere. Tracy,
I am sure as a businessman you would wish a customer would speak with you before leaving a negative comment if they have a concern. I am no different and had you asked to speak with me (The owner) you may have seen things differently. We were not called out to replace a sign ballast but instead to find out why a breaker was tripping that you assumed was from another electrician you hired. We diagnosed the problem to be in the sign, gave you a 10% discount on that invoice and ordered the ballast. The second charge, while listed as a diagnostic fee, was actually a fee to take the sign apart and install the ballast after it came in. You were not going to be charged twice for the same job Tracy but once to find out the problem and one charge to install the ballast, which brings me to what you claim to be the cost of the ballast. The ballast in your sign is no longer made and we had to research to find an equivalent ballast that would work in your application. That price plus shipping was NOT $80.27 as you assume but actually cost me $122.58! (I prepaid and ordered it to make sure your sign was up quickly) Yes, we needed to charge you to diagnose the problem, and yes we needed to charge you to take your sign apart and install the new ballast but no, we were not double charging you at all. To sum up what you were actually experienced, the first invoice was to diagnose the problem you thought was created by another electrician, it was NOT to install a ballast. The estimate of $383.00 was to locate your special ballast, order it, make another trip, take your sign apart and install the $122.58 ballast plus tax. If you would like, I can send you a picture of the ballast you have for you to do some accurate research of cost for yourself. I would like to only charge you one time but I am sorry, when our technicians have to make second trips and spend time installing equipment they need to be paid for their time. I am not making the money I should, especially when you get a discount but, since I have the ballast, I will still install it at the price we quoted if you wish now that you know the truth about your project. Feel free to call me if you have any other questions.
