Tumwater Family Practice Clinic

Impersonal, unsympathetic, and rigid

Switched our family of three to them (Dad, mom, child) after previous provider retired. We were assigned (based on appt. availability) to three different doctors-- at previous provider, the same doctor treated the entire family.

At TFM, the doctors didn't inquire or follow up on intra-family health issues/ stress impact. Previous provider was (obviously) aware of intra-family health issues/ stress impacts and could consider/ recommend holistic treatments taking lifestyle/ household/ stress into account.

One family member had an immunodeficiency flare up with intense associated nerve pain and called the clinic. The nurse on call was dismissive, saying they'd had the same illness and it wasn't that bad.

Attitude toward family members seeking treatment for ADHD/ ADD was suspicious/ negative/ doubtful. We had the general impression from our doctors that TFM does not think it is a "real" disorder, and those who are diagnosed as such are trying to game the system. This attitude is amplified if a patient exhibits any ADHD symptoms when taking medication-- one dr referred to ADHD symptoms (inattentiveness/ forgetfulness/ restless) as "withdrawal," and another called them (restless/ jittery/ antsy) "the shakes," indicating they believe such behavior results from the medication rather than the illness. It is reasonable to assume, from these statements, these TFM doctors think medication management is a cure-all that erases symptoms, rather than a management system which suppresses/ minimizes symptoms.

Two months in a row, an ADHD family member made medication management appointments with TFM. Normally, they prefer afternoon appointments, but TFM had only morning available. Both times, the family member missed their alarm and slept in. First time, they missed the appt completely and rescheduled for a different day (also only morning available). Second time, (off medication at this point, because they missed their last appointment), they missed the alarm and arrived at TFM 15 minutes late.

The front desk staff was unconcerned with ADHD symptom expression/ lack of meds/ necessity of med check. Refused to reschedule same day appt, with same or different doctor-- said TFM's policy for patients on controlled substances is to keep them with the same prescribing doctor, due to familiarity w/ medical history. (Um, charts?) The missed-appt dr had same-day "emergency" (as in, reserved time for same-day appts starting in two hours) away) appointments available, but the TFM front desk said med checks don't qualify as emergencies and refused to schedule. Offered an appt the following day--in the morning.
