Great experience with my elderly mom!
I had such a fantastic experience with Dr. Quidwai at the Hearing Doctors. My mom has Alzheimer's and is significantly incapacitated in her ability to move, follow directions, and comply with requests. Her old hearing aids stopped working, and when I attempted to have her fitted with new ones at her community, we discovered that she needed an intensive, professionally administered, wax removal process before we could get to the hearing aids. I was really worried about bringing my mom to the office because she was exhibiting combative tendencies and often was very aggressive and physical with aides and caregivers. I now know that part of her problem was related to the fact that she couldn't hear and couldn't understand. When I explained the behavioral problems to Dr. Quidwai, not only was she not afraid, she expressed confidence in our ability to work together to get to success for my mom. She cleared her schedule so she could spend extra time with us and we very patiently walked my mom through the process five minutes at a time. Every time my mom got frustrated and combative we slowed down, let her catch her breath and started again. After about an hour, the wax was removed… It was significantly impacting her hearing. She could instantly hear better and was calmer. At that point we were able to fit her hearing aids. She was instantly able to follow directions, and was able to understand me when I spoke with a low voice. It's been several weeks and she has not had one combative or aggressive incident in her care community. We are actually able to have nice conversations, to the degree which she is able with her disease. I was, and am, so grateful to Dr. Quidwai for her patience and kindness throughout. It actually made me feel emotional as I was leaving the facility. I feel guilty that I didn't know this was my mom's problem sooner.
Lastly, at no time was I ever pressured to pay more for hearing aids than I wanted. I was given the options and I was candid that I didn't think that I needed a super long-term option for my mom. We found a price range and quality of device that worked for my budget.
I have already recommended Dr. Quidwai to a friend. Thank goodness for people who choose this profession. It might not seem like hearing could be a life-changing experience for an Alzheimer's patient, but in our case, it has made quite a difference in my mom's frustration, and my exhaustion!
