Never Again

A/C went out last week. Blower unit wouldn't even come on. They came out and told me my whole furnace was junk and had to be replaced. Well, so nothing was accomplished and I was charged $200 for their time. But no worries, if I buy a unit from them, they will take the $200 off, but I'd be charged extra labor anyways due to how my basement was set up. Without a detailed estimate, was told to expect $3,500 to $4000. Well, figured I'd get multiple estimates anyways, before having "The Good Guys" give me an estimate in writing. First one I got was $2,550. Weird huh. Have another one later this morning. But all of that is besides the point now. I spent around $600 dollars 4 or 5 years ago and upgraded to the new style variable speed blower unit. Figured if I was having everything replaced, might as well see if I can get the unit out. Mind you the tech that was here for the service call said he was unable to remove it himself due to the "heavy amount" of water damage. So overnight I got bored (I'm an insomniac) and opened it up. Okay, I see a bit of water corrosion, but nothing like I was made to believe, and definitely not on anything like the mother board, connectors, or even the blower unit. Just a little on the sheet metal. So now I am curious why this thing isn't working. So I check the fuse, check all the connections, the limit switches, unplug the blower unit and plug back in (to reset it), double check the door switch works, close everything back up and flip the switch. Wouldn't you know it, fires right up like new. Almost spent (let's just say $3,000) because I trusted The Good Guys. Turns out the exact same thing happened to my wife's aunt, where they said the furnace was garbage and needed to be replaced. She called someone else for a second opinion, and $100 later that same furnace has been running 10+ years. Never again will these guys be stepping foot inside my house, and I'll make darn sure to keep them out of anyone else's home that is considering using them. Doubt I'm getting any of that $200 back either...
