Rough experience

I would like to start by saying I have used the Handyman Company multiple times with each experience ending satisfactory. However, my most recent experience with this company has left me feeling taken advantage of.

I called on January 7th, 2021 to setup an appointment for January 29th @ 9am to have a cat door and blinds installed. This date and time were very important as we were moving into a new home and had a small time frame in which we needed the work done.

After setting up the appointment, I did not receive any sort of confirmation of the appointment. On Monday, January 25th I called the company to confirm the appointment. After being routed through their answering service, I received a call back confirming my January 29th @ 9am appointment.

On Thursday January 28th, I received a call from the company asking if they could move my appointment to today. Unfortunately, that would not work because we needed the work done specifically on the 29th and had made all of our moving plans around the 9am time the company gave us.

Finally, the day of January 29th arrives and we have moved into our new home. At 8:56am, I receive a call from the company asking if they could move my appointment to Saturday the 30th. Unfortunately, that would not work for us either as we needed their service on the 29th. After informing the company that the 30th would not work, “James” let out a long sigh and said “fine, I will be there at noon”.

At 11:09am, I receive a call from “Matt” letting me know that James “truck had died” and he would be over for a quick estimate and they could do the work next week. I told Matt that was unacceptable because we had said from the very beginning we needed the work done on the 29th.

Matt finally arrives at my house at 12:43pm. From the very beginning, he stated there was no way the work would be done today. Nonetheless, he started working on the cat door. He put the cat door in (roughly 2 hours of work) and then installed 4 lights in each of our bedrooms (roughly 30 mins of work). Matt says he does not have time to do the blinds and is done working by 3:15pm. He did say he could come back the following week to finish up the work.

Here is where I feel I was taken advantage of. For the 2 and half hours of work, Matt told me the total was $425. After telling him that was an awfully steep rate for a returning customer, his response was “electrical work is usually $90-$110 an hour”. He then offered me a discount since I was a returning customer and said I owed $350. I paid the $350 because I did not want a confrontation however I am left with a very bad taste in my mouth.

I ended up paying $140 per hour to use this company’s service and the work I needed done on the 29th is still not complete. The work was very basic handyman work and Matt did a good job with the work he did complete. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this company to anyone due to the poor scheduling and extremely high hourly rate.
